Right, so i know "Have you tried turning it off and back on again" has become a bit of a joke over the last few years..... but most of the time it surprisingly works!
What causes devices to play up?
Technology is complicated, on average the typical home computer can reach between 150 to 200 million operations per second. There are a lot of places where a device can make a mistake; the wrong file could get overwritten, an instruction could get sent at just the wrong time and there are many more things that could cause issues. Most of the time the device will work the issue out on its own. However there are some things that the device just cannot recover from. So turning it off and on again might be the best next step.
What does rebooting devices do?
Turning the device off and back on again or "Power Cycling" the device does something really helpful; it stops all the current actions that the device is performing and allows the device to start again from scratch. It might be a pain, especially if you can't save a file you're working on, but if it gets the device working again it will likely be worth it.
When should I reboot my devices?
While rebooting your devices when they are having issues will normally help fix a lot of common problems, it is also a good idea to do this on a daily basis. Power cycling devices once a day can help prevent a lot of issues from happening in the first place.
Here at Over Geek we always recommend, whenever you are experiencing a device playing up, the first step should be try turning it off and on again. If that doesn't work reach out to us for a hand.
